Aerospace Alloy Fabrications
All the titanium alloys are now much easier to cut on fiber lasers. Once again, the fiber laser has contributed greatly to allow this to occur. The near infrared wavelength allows argon to be used instead of much more expensive and harder to get helium which was necessary when using a CO2 laser. A CO2 laser interacts with argon creating a plasma plume by ionization causing the beam to attenuate and making it almost impossible to cut, but this does not happen with fiber laser beams using this more affordable gas.
Cutting Capabilities & Alloys
Some processing is done with nitrogen on CO2 lasers, but this causes nitrogen embrittlement which must be avoided in an aerospace or other critical application. Never use oxygen as it interacts violently with titanium above 1900 degrees Fahrenheit.
Commercially pure titanium, and titanium alloys can be processed at Ohio Laser up to 3/8 inch thick. Titanium grades processed include: Commercially pure grades 1,2,3,4, 7 and 11 and titanium alloys Ti-6Al-4V, grade 5, Ti-6Al-4V ELI, grade 23, grade 12 and Ti-5Al-2.5Sn
